Great! I can just picture his own “Eyes like baseballs and teeth like jellied fire.” (From Fear & Loathing) Huge fan of his writing with many a hysterical laugh over the years. Read “Levono…” on flight to, and during a fishing tournament in Kona, HI. Life imitating art, etc.
Thanks for this visit to outrageousness. I say, “safe insanity and over-consumption is just reading Hunter S. Thompson!”

Thanks, Monica. Colorful is a huge understatement when describing Hunter Thompson. I know several other photographers who had memorable photo shoots with him too, including one who was hit with a small piece of shrapnel. Thompson also once accidentally shot his assistant.

I was there when the phone rang in the middle of the night for the photo shoot, and then afterward when Jeffrey returned home from the project. He told me in detail about the shoot, and then yes, I interviewed him extensively again. Jeffrey is fortunate that he has a superb memory like his 92-year old father, who remembers the most minute details from events long ago. Also, having all the photographs here instantly takes Jeffrey back to that moment in time. We ran across the Polaroid Thompson took of Jeffrey a while back, which made us both chuckle, remembering the madness of that photo shoot.

Echoing the comments of others … Knowing nothing of the circumstances, i could not discern fact from fiction and while reading initially presumed it a first hand account then a complete fabrication. Perhaps that’s the best compliment.

What a fascinating story, Becky. It was as if you were there, too. You must interview your husband very carefully to write such a compelling post, rich with details. Really brought Thompson to life. What a colorful guy.

Thanks, Jessica. I’m not sure if this will go in the book yet or not. I’m still considering several things in terms of structure and how these stories all fit together. Jeffrey has experienced so many unusual moments like this, it’s hard to know what to include and what to leave out. I guess that will be my great challenge when I get to the revision process! For now, I’m just getting all these stories down, and sharing a few here and there on my blog.
