I agree with everything you've written--especially the part about those who actually become Olympians when all the rest of us only dream of doing it.

That's one of the reasons I love the Olympics. It brings people together. After all, who doesn't love it when a complete underdog wins against all odds or when we witness poetry in motion?

I love the opening ceremonies too. I'm always amazed at the pageantry and what they end up pulling off. Enjoy it tonight.

#1 - swimming and diving events - I may never see an olympic athlete like M. Phelps again - how incredible is his talent?!! Plus seeing all the younger athletes to look forward to watching.
#2 - gymnastics - because one of my daughter's was involved in this sport through high school. Now I understand it!
#3 - track and field - these athletes are just incredible.
#4 - volley ball - I am new to appreciating this sport. The men and women playing have such incredibly healthy bodies - they make it look so easy, but it isn't.
#5 - because I used to dream about being an olympic athlete when I was a little girl and am so thrilled for those of us who break out and actually DO IT!

Becky, I am not a big fan of Olympic. Still I enjoy it, because so many people enjoy it. And if a common thing can give so many people a reason to smile, a reason to inspire and a reason to feel proud when one of their people becomes winner then we all need to enjoy it.

Aaah, yes, the opening ceremonies--love them!! Tthe torch lighting is always great. I particularly liked the arrow being shot through the air to light the cauldron in Barcelona a decade ago. It's all fab--even the parade of nations which takes forever. I love seeing some of the traditional dress and the underdog nations with two athletes. It's all about what is possible. And of course all the flipping, twisting, turning, sprinting, jumping, flying and agonizing endurance feats we see are mesmerizing. Go athletes!!

Hard to resist the opening ceremonies, with all the sense of possibility and community they represent. This year's torch lighting (I'm watching right now) is pretty spectacular. And despite being an ex-runner, it's the gymnasts I love watching most (in summer) and figure skaters (winter). Speaking of running, the image of Gabriele Andersen-Scheiss staggering to finish the first year women ran the marathon (L.A.1984) is forever etched in my mind as a symbol of singular determination.

You are right about that, Namita! It's hard to even imagine the dedication of some of these athletes. Talk about impressive!
